Nonsan Mayor Baek Sunghyun: "We Must Not Let Companies Leave the Region Due to Power Shortages"

Agreement Signed with KEPCO and LH for Construction of Yeonmu Substation and Transmission Lines

Nonsan Mayor Baek Sunghyun: "We Must Not Let Companies Leave the Region Due to Power Shortages"

A Yeonmu substation and transmission lines will be constructed in the national defense industry complex being promoted by Nonsan City, Chungnam Province.

The city announced on the 29th that it had signed a business agreement on the 28th in the city hall situation room with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), and others in attendance, for the construction of a 154kV Yeonmu substation and related transmission lines in the defense industry complex site.

According to the agreement, the city will promptly support various permits and approvals related to the establishment of the new substation.

KEPCO plans to actively cooperate to ensure stable power supply by promoting the construction of the 154kV Yeonmu substation and related transmission lines.

LH will cooperate in supplying the substation construction site within the defense industry complex and in all necessary procedures such as required permit changes.

In 2018, the city signed an investment agreement worth a total of 213 billion won with Company C, a promising secondary battery company in the region, for the Dongsan General Industrial Complex, and concluded a business agreement to expand the factory starting in 2019.

However, due to power supply issues, the investment was canceled, and Company C decided to build a new factory in Eumseong, Chungbuk in 2020, which dealt a significant blow to local job creation and economic revitalization.

In response, Mayor Baek Seonghyeon met with Kim Dongcheol, President of KEPCO, earlier this year to explain the necessity of establishing a stable power supply in the region for fostering the defense and military supply industries, leading to the signing of this business agreement.

Since the 8th popularly elected administration, the city has signed investment agreements worth about 1 trillion won with leading companies based on bold innovation and proactive administration, and expects power demand to increase rapidly.

In particular, the city plans to offer for sale a defense industry complex with a size of 870,000 square meters by 2027, and to create a specialized military supply industry complex of 3.3 million square meters (1 million pyeong) in connection with the defense industry complex in the future.

In addition, the Defense Future Technology Research Center is scheduled to relocate by 2030, and new recruit training centers of army divisions nationwide will be sequentially closed and integrated into the Army Training Center.

Furthermore, as factories of mid-sized companies such as KDI Co., Ltd. and Aluko Co., Ltd. are newly established, future preparedness for power supply is more important than ever, and it is expected that the construction of the new substation in the defense industry complex will resolve the region's power supply issues.

Mayor Baek Seonghyeon said, "The establishment of the Yeonmu substation is an important project to realize Nonsan's future vision of becoming a hub for the defense and military supply industry," adding, "We will continue to build a stable power infrastructure through ongoing cooperation with KEPCO and LH, and create a foundation for the joint development of the local community and businesses."
