Pretending to Go on a Family Trip to Smuggle Drugs... Multi-Billion Won Drug Trafficking Organization Uncovered

Backpack Containing Drugs Delivered in the Philippines
Quantity Enough for 300,000 People to Use Simultaneously

A group involved in smuggling drugs worth 2 billion KRW from the Philippines into the country and distributing them has been arrested by the police.

On the 29th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced that four people, including the smuggling organizer Mr. A (33), were detained on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic substances). Ms. E (23), a hostess at a Gangnam entertainment venue who received and used methamphetamine from them, is also under investigation for violating the Narcotics Control Act.

According to the police, Mr. A and others are accused of smuggling and selling 6.643 kg of methamphetamine and 803 g of ketamine (worth approximately 3.5 billion KRW) from the Philippines to South Korea in four separate shipments. This amount is enough for 300,000 simultaneous doses.

They operated in an organized manner by dividing roles such as smuggling, distribution, and transportation. Mr. A traveled to the Philippines under the pretense of a family trip, received backpacks containing narcotics locally, and brought them into the country. Then, distributor Mr. B and others divided the drugs into 1g portions and individually packaged them. Subsequently, transporter Mr. C sold the drugs using the "throwing method" in residential areas around Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces.

They joined the crime after seeing high-paying part-time job advertisements and were confirmed to have acted under direct orders from an unidentified ringleader via the Telegram messenger app.

The police conducted focused searches on 71 locations suspected of hiding the drugs and recovered a total of 58g of methamphetamine from 58 of those places. Additionally, they seized 3.18 kg of methamphetamine and 803 g of ketamine that the group had not yet distributed to the market.

A police official stated, "This is a confirmed case of smuggling narcotics overseas under the guise of a family trip and distributing them domestically," adding, "We will conduct thorough investigations and tracking to strictly punish narcotics-related crimes."
