'Tsunami' Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 in Japan Restarted on 29th... Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 Preparing

Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) Like Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

Kyodo News reported on the 28th that Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2, located in Onagawa Town, Miyagi Prefecture, which was damaged by the tsunami caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, will be restarted on the night of the 29th.

At that time, all three reactors at Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant automatically shut down, and a tsunami approximately 13 meters high flooded the building's basement, causing damage.

Afterwards, Tohoku Electric Power suspended the operation of Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2, applied for a restart review in 2013, and has been following the procedures since then.

Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 is a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), the same type as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, where a core meltdown occurred during the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011.

Meanwhile, Chugoku Electric Power began loading nuclear fuel into the reactor of Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2, located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, western Honshu, to restart the reactor on the same day.

Chugoku Electric Power is carrying out the work aiming for a restart in December this year.

Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 is also a Boiling Water Reactor.
