Two Teams Compete, Sweeping Overall 2nd Place, Autonomous Navigation 1st Place, Remote Control 1st Place, and Design & Manufacturing Awards

Securing 1st and 2nd Place for Three Consecutive Years Since 2022... "Built as a Department Tradition"

Dong-A University (President Lee Hae-woo) announced on the 28th that students from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering swept a total of 12 awards, including the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award, at the 5th Autonomous Boat Competition (KABOAT 2024).

Hosted by the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, the competition was held earlier this month at Masan Robot Land in Gyeongnam, with 32 teams from 22 universities nationwide participating.

Two teams from Dong-A University's Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering competed in this event.

The "OpenDEP Team" (Park Junsang, Ahn Junbeom, Kim Seungyeop, supervised by Professor Lee Sangbong) won 2nd place overall and received a total of 8 awards, including the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award and 1st place in the Autonomous Navigation Tournament (Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Award).

The "OpenDEJ Team" (Kim Jongmin, Lee Jimin, Lee Minseon, Kim Baekhyeon, Kim Chanwoo, supervised by Professor Lee Sangbong) received 4 awards, including 1st place in the Remote Control Tournament (Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Award) and the Design and Manufacturing Award.

Students from Dong-A University's Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering have participated in this competition annually since its inception five years ago, achieving excellent results with one overall championship and three runner-up titles. Notably, they have secured 1st and 2nd place for three consecutive years since 2022.

The awarded projects in this competition are comprehensive mission-type autonomous boats equipped with various sensors such as GPS, gyroscopes, LiDAR, and cameras, as well as twin-axis thrusters and control devices, enabling position and attitude control, obstacle avoidance, and image recognition. The students directly handled everything from hull design and manufacturing to control algorithm development through 3D printing.

Park Junsang, team leader of the "OpenDEP Team," said, "I participated as a team member last year, but preparing for the competition as a team leader this year allowed me to learn and grow a lot with my teammates. I feel very proud that our efforts were rewarded with this award."

Kim Jongmin, team leader of the "OpenDEJ Team," shared, "Although the preparation period for the competition was both short and long, and we made many mistakes and faced shortcomings, it was a meaningful time where we gained valuable experience and learning by working hard together with our advisor, seniors, and teammates."

Professor Park Youngil, head of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Dong-A University, and Professor Lee Sangbong said, "It was gratifying to see the students gain confidence through the process of 'we can do it' and to watch them enjoy the event like a festival. We appreciate the students' efforts and passion, which have led to excellent results every year, and we are proud that our students are building a tradition. We also thank the Dong-A University LINC 3.0 Project Group's 'SPC+ Project' and the College of Engineering's 'Makerspace' for their support."
