Condolence Line Continues at Kim Sumi's Funeral Home... Shin Hyunjun Arrives First

Funeral Hall Set Up at Hanyang University Hospital
Condolences from 'Ilyongi' Park Eun-soo, Yeom Jeong-ah, Jo In-sung, and Others

On the morning of the 25th, a procession of mourners continued at the funeral hall of actress Kim Sumi (75), who suddenly passed away due to hyperglycemic shock.


Kim was transported to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital in a state of cardiac arrest around 8 a.m. on the 25th and was pronounced dead. The funeral hall was set up in Special Room 6 at Hanyang University Hospital's funeral home that afternoon.


The first to visit the funeral hall was actor Shin Hyunjoon, who had a special connection with the deceased. Although formal condolences were accepted from 3 p.m., Shin Hyunjoon arrived around 1 p.m. and shed tears. Shin, who appeared with Kim in the film series "Glory of the Family" (2006?2011), was so close to her that he usually called her "Mom" or "Mother." Additionally, Kim and Shin appeared as mother and son in the movie "Barefoot Ki-bong" (2006).

Actor Park Eunsoo, who played the role of Kim's son 'Ilyong' in MBC's "Jeonwon Ilgi," also visited the funeral hall. Yeom Jeongah, Choi Jiwoo, Jo Inseong, and senior and junior actors from the group SS501 Kim Hyungjun also paid their respects.


Furthermore, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo Inchon, along with actors Choi Bulam, Kim Yonggon, Kim Youngok, Kang Booja, Kim Hyesoo, comedians Jung Junha, Yoon Jeongsu, broadcasters Tak Jaehoon, Hyunyoung, and others expressed their condolences. Minister Yoo said, "She left a deeper impression than anyone else. She was not flashy but approached like family with warmth and humor, so the sorrow is greater," adding, "It feels like losing a family member."

Broadcaster Hyunyoung wrote on her Instagram, "Her warm care with a smiling face is still vivid in my eyes..." She added, "My heart is so heavy that I can't do anything. I was always grateful and thank you. I sincerely pray for her soul to rest in peace," along with several photos taken with the deceased.


Chef Jung Jiseon, who appeared on the Netflix variety show "Black and White Chef: Culinary Class War," also prayed for Kim's soul. Chef Jung said, "She was truly a special person to me. A warm person who treated me sincerely. We even spoke on the phone just five days ago..." expressing her sorrow. She continued, "She always supported me and gave me strength. I am so upset. I love Kim Sumi. I respect Kim Sumi. I sincerely pray for her soul to rest in peace."


Yoon Hyunsook, formerly of the group Jam, shared photos taken with Kim during her lifetime. Yoon wrote, "Teacher, how could you leave like this? I was planning to go to Gangwon-do with you and Jeongsu, but my heart hurts so much."


Announcer-turned-broadcaster Yoon Youngmi shared an anecdote about Kim on her Instagram. Yoon recalled, "I went to her home in Seocho-dong. She served a warm meal with homemade soy sauce marinated crab and barley grilled fish. When I went to host her 70th birthday party, all the famous Korean actors and singers were there. I realized how much she gave and how big her heart was." She added, "She never passed by flowers without admiring them, read poetry and wrote even at her age, and loved dressing up in beautiful clothes?a born woman. She always said, 'I will love until I die. I will die loving...' I believe she went to heaven holding love. I respect and love Kim Sumi."


Born in 1949, Kim Sumi debuted as an MBC 3rd generation talent in 1971. She earned the title of "Nation's Mom" as 'Ilyong Eomni' in the drama "Jeonwon Ilgi" (1980?2002) and appeared in "Chief Inspector" (1971?1989), the sitcom "Hello Francesca" Season 3 (2005?2006), among others. She was also active in variety shows such as "Sumi's Side Dishes" (2018?2021), "Are You Eating?" (2019?2020), "Excuse Sumi: Just Try It" (2023), and "Boss, Your Ears Are Donkey Ears" (2024).


She is survived by her husband Jung Changgyu, daughter Jung Juri, son Jung Myungho, and daughter-in-law, actress Seo Hyorim. The funeral procession will be held at 11 a.m. on the 27th, and the burial site is Yongin Park Honestone.
