Moon Geum-ju, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea representing Goheung, Boseong, Jangheung, and Gangjin, pointed out at the comprehensive audit of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries held at the National Assembly on the 25th that "not only illegal seafood but also the online distribution of illegal fishing gear must be urgently eradicated."
At the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries audit conducted on the 8th, Rep. Moon revealed the reality of illegal seafood openly distributed online and called for thorough government crackdowns. On the 23rd, she also urged implementation along with a business agreement signed with the Korea Online Shopping Association, the Korea Consumer Federation, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives to prevent the online illegal distribution of seafood during closed seasons and prohibited size limits.
During the comprehensive audit of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries held that day, she pointed out the reality of illegal fishing gear being openly distributed online and urged the ministry to conduct thorough crackdowns. Rep. Moon emphasized again, "For the creation of a sustainable fishing environment and the stable livelihood of fishermen, it is urgent to eradicate not only illegal seafood distribution but also the online illegal distribution of fishing gear that devastates fishing grounds," adding, "Along with thorough crackdowns by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Coast Guard, efforts are needed from both producers and consumers to secure stable fishery resources."
Meanwhile, Rep. Moon is preparing to lead the proposal of a revision to the Fisheries Resources Management Act to prevent the online distribution of illegal seafood. This bill fundamentally blocks the online distribution of illegal seafood by requiring telecommunication sales intermediaries to prevent the distribution of illegal seafood.
