On the 25th, Gwangju City announced that it has formed and is operating the "Home Appliance Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Support Group," led by the Deputy Mayor of Culture and Economy, to effectively respond to the production volume relocation of Samsung Electronics' Gwangju plant.
The city launched the "Home Appliance Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Support Group" and held its first meeting the previous day in the Citizen Dialogue Room within the government building. The support group is headed by Lee Sang-gap, Deputy Mayor of Culture and Economy, and is composed of the Partner Company Support Team and the New Industry Transition Support Team. Related departments such as the Future Industry General Office, Gwangju-Jeonnam Small and Medium Venture Business Administration, Small and Medium Business Corporation Gwangju Regional Headquarters, Gwangju Technopark, and the Industry-Academia-Research Council are also participating.
The support group plans to promptly analyze the impact of Samsung Electronics Gwangju plant's production volume relocation overseas and reflect the results in policy. To this end, they have listened to the opinions of local companies. The companies pointed out that to respond to the periodic relocation of Samsung Electronics' production volume, it is necessary to strengthen the independence and capabilities of companies through finished product manufacturing. They especially emphasized the need for active response and support to prevent secondary damage to partner companies.
Accordingly, the support group is conducting on-site opinion gathering regarding the impact of production volume relocation on the market, the response status of partner companies, and Gwangju City's support measures targeting about 60 partner companies of Samsung Electronics' Gwangju plant. They are also discussing the dissemination of Samsung-type smart factories and the utilization of partner company support funds, and plan to promote support measures such as discovering new smart home appliance businesses and advancing into the connected living sector to strengthen the competitiveness of the local home appliance industry.
Son Doo-young, General Director of Future Industry at Gwangju City, said, "The home appliance industry is the second largest manufacturing sector in Gwangju after the automobile industry," and added, "We will carefully review voices from the field and work together with Samsung Electronics, partner companies, and Gwangju City to ensure the growth of Gwangju's manufacturing and foundational industries."
