Submarine Construction Site Tour, Discussion on Cooperation for Poland Submarine Acquisition Project
"Hanwha Ocean's Submarine Training Roadmap and Advanced Production Capabilities Impress Deeply"
Polish Naval Academy Superintendent Tomasz Szubrycht (Rear Admiral, Polish Navy) and Republic of Korea Naval Academy Superintendent Lee Soo-yeol (Rear Admiral, Class 45) along with key officials from both countries' naval academies visited Hanwha Ocean's Geoje shipyard on the 23rd.
Thomas Szubrik, Principal of the Polish Naval Academy (third from the left), and his delegation visited Hanwha Ocean on the 23rd, touring the production facilities and shipbuilding sites.
They toured not only the Jangbogo-III Batch-II submarine construction site but also Hanwha Ocean’s technical training center, which cultivates technical personnel, and research facilities developing automation equipment. They also experienced a state-of-the-art VR painting simulation.
Hanwha Ocean explained to the Polish Naval Academy officials not only its world-class submarine construction technology but also the crew and maintenance personnel training programs designed to ensure the Polish Navy’s stable submarine operation capabilities.
Following this, Hanwha Ocean held discussions with the Polish Naval Academy delegation regarding cooperation matters related to the Polish submarine acquisition project.
Hanwha Ocean’s Defense Research Center continuously strengthens its competitiveness in the shipbuilding and marine defense sectors through cutting-edge technology research and innovation. Based on this, Hanwha Ocean explored the possibility of long-term joint research and development (R&D) cooperation with the Polish Naval Academy.
The Polish Naval Academy is responsible for training officers who will lead the future of its navy while conducting various R&D activities in the marine defense sector. In particular, it possesses research organizations and diverse testing facilities for defense technology and is independently developing various fields such as unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).
Polish Naval Academy Superintendent Tomasz Szubrycht said, “I was deeply impressed by Hanwha Ocean’s submarine training roadmap and cutting-edge submarine production capabilities,” adding, “This was a valuable opportunity to foster broad cooperation between the two countries in marine industry development, including the Orca submarine project.”
A Hanwha Ocean official emphasized, “The Orca project is not merely a submarine acquisition program but will serve as a catalyst to further strengthen cooperation between Korea and Poland as long-term partners in economic, industrial, and naval power development.”
Hanwha Ocean is expanding cooperation with local companies to secure the Orca project, which involves the acquisition of three Polish submarines. Recently, it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Polish defense group WB for submarine business collaboration and is advancing plans to contribute to the development of Poland’s shipbuilding and related industries through localization of submarine MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) and technology transfer in partnership with strong domestic small and medium-sized enterprises.
