"Illegal Lodging Business is a Crime Against Public Welfare"…Criticism of Former President Moon Jae-in's Daughter Over 'Unauthorized Operation' Allegations

On the 23rd, during an on-site audit conducted by the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee targeting Jeju Island, allegations of illegal lodging operations involving Moon Da-hye, the daughter of former President Moon Jae-in, came under scrutiny.

Bae Jun-young, a member of the People Power Party, pointed out, "It's not due to COVID-19, and tourist numbers are increasing, but one of the reasons lodging facilities are struggling is because unregistered lodging businesses and illegal shared lodging operators are running selfish operations."

He then asked Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon, "Is it legal or illegal to operate such lodging businesses without any permits?" Governor Oh responded, "If there are no permit measures, it could be illegal." Bae emphasized, seemingly referring to Moon's case, "Strict neutrality and thorough investigations without any sanctuary must be guaranteed."

Lee Sung-kwon, another member of the same party, raised his voice, saying, "Unregistered illegal lodging businesses pose risks to fire safety, hygiene, and security, potentially causing significant harm to visitors," adding, "There is a problem where lawsuits could arise over liability after accidents occur. Operating illegal lodging businesses is a crime against public welfare."

He continued, "Former Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs Cho Kuk stated that Moon registered the lodging business and operated an Airbnb business," and pointed out, "According to materials requested from Jeju Autonomous Province, the property is designated as a residence, and according to provincial office data, it is a building where lodging business registration is impossible and is not registered as a rural lodging business."

When Lee asked Park Ki-nam, head of the Jeju Police Unit, about the investigation progress regarding the illegal lodging allegations, Park said, "We received an investigation request on the 13th of last month and visited the site, but the door was locked, so we conducted inquiries with nearby residents."

Lee also pointed out Moon's officetel in Yeongdeungpo. He said, "There were concerns about illegal lodging at Moon's officetel in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, and the Yeongdeungpo District Office visited the site, but the door was locked, so the attempt failed," emphasizing, "If she is confident, she should open the door. It seems highly likely that Moon operated illegal lodging businesses in both Jeju and Yeongdeungpo."
