AI Startup Technology to Be Integrated into LG Electronics Laptops

Ministry of SMEs and Startups Holds 'On-Device AI Challenge' Performance Presentation

Artificial intelligence (AI) startups will grow together with large corporations such as LG Electronics.


On the 23rd, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups held a ‘Performance Presentation’ at LG Science Park in Seoul, announcing the collaboration achievements and commercialization plans of outstanding projects by AI startups participating in the ‘On-Device AI Challenge,’ jointly promoted with global corporations including LG Electronics, Intel Korea, and Microsoft Korea.


On-device AI refers to AI technology that collects and processes information independently within the user's smart device without relying on a central cloud server.

AI Startup Technology to Be Integrated into LG Electronics Laptops

Since March, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups has been promoting the ‘On-Device AI Challenge,’ supporting AI startups that can develop innovative technologies faster than large corporations and bring them to market by embedding their creative technologies into LG Electronics’ smart devices, enabling startups and large corporations to grow together.


In the March recruitment, a total of 128 startups applied for 10 selected companies, recording a high competition rate of 12.8 to 1. The 10 startups selected through evaluations by demand companies and experts collaborated with LG Electronics and others on technology verification (PoC) and other projects.


This event was organized to spread the achievements of promising AI startups through presentations of collaboration project results and commercialization plans for outstanding projects.


The event proceeded with an opening address by Kim Seong-seop, Vice Minister of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and a welcome speech by Jang Ik-hwan, Head of the BS Business Division at LG Electronics, followed by a tour of the performance exhibition booths, a progress report on the challenge, and presentations on collaboration achievements and commercialization plans for outstanding projects.


The AI technologies of three companies?Clika, Gamba Labs, and Preriskuner?selected as the final outstanding projects at this performance presentation are planned to be embedded in LG Electronics’ next-generation laptops after additional collaboration and internal review with LG Electronics.


Vice Minister Kim Seong-seop of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups said, “AI startups play an important role in creating new markets and generating social and economic outcomes through innovative technologies. We will expand and intensively support the challenge so that promising AI startups can gain competitiveness and secure leadership in the global market through collaboration with global corporations.”


Jang Ik-hwan, Vice President of LG Electronics, said, “Starting with AI PCs this year, we will continue to consult with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to discover domestic startups with on-device AI solutions in more diverse fields in the future.”
