Non-Terrestrial Networks Surpassing Existing Communication Limits
Enabling New Services Like Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
6G Forum Plans to Participate in Global Standardization Process
LG Uplus announced on the 23rd that it has published the "6G White Paper," which forecasts the development direction of next-generation 6G mobile communication services.
The 6G White Paper is centered on non-terrestrial networks, the biggest differentiator between 6G and previous generation communication technologies. The paper proposes ways to overcome the limitations of existing communication networks and enable global communication services by utilizing communication satellites that support non-terrestrial networks, including ▲Low Earth Orbit satellites (LEO) ▲Medium Earth Orbit satellites (MEO) ▲Geostationary Earth Orbit satellites (GEO).
It also covers the technological development directions of non-terrestrial networks, the current status of non-terrestrial network standardization by the international standardization organization 3GPP, and various service scenarios. LG Uplus aims to lead new value and innovative changes that 6G commercialization will bring to customers.
LG Uplus forecasts that a "satellite data center" combining satellites and edge computing will be established in the future. According to the white paper, this will maximize data processing efficiency even in remote islands and isolated areas, and become an essential technology for implementing high-speed, low-latency services such as telemedicine.
Once non-terrestrial networks are commercialized, it will be possible to overcome the limitations of communication coverage, enabling the introduction of new services such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Multidimensional communication services utilizing air and space will become possible, and innovative service implementations are expected in various industries requiring real-time connectivity.
LG Uplus plans to focus on concept verification and technology development of next-generation mobile communication technologies while participating in the standardization process at the 6G Forum, the representative domestic mobile communication technology council, and 3GPP, the international de facto standardization organization. The contents of the 6G White Paper can be found on the official LG Uplus blog.
