Unveiling Ceremony Held on the 22nd... US 8th Army Deputy Commander, Korean War Veterans Association and Other Veterans Organizations Attend
District Currently Creating Exhibition Space for General Walker at Peace Culture Trench
A bust and memorial space honoring the achievements of General Walton Harris Walker have been established in Dobong-dong. It has been about 74 years since.
Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) announced that, about 74 years after the death of General Walton Harris Walker, a bust and memorial space for General Walker were established at 637-107 Dobong-dong, and an unveiling ceremony was held on the 22nd.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, Brigadier General Roderick Raphman, Deputy Commander of the US 8th Army, Jin Gang-hyun, Director of the Seoul Northern Veterans Affairs Office, veterans' organizations including the Korean War Veterans Association, the Meritorious Service Association, the Bereaved Families of Fallen Soldiers Association, the Widows of Fallen Soldiers Association, and about 50 residents.
Since 2022, the district has been promoting a commemorative project to honor the achievements and dedication of General Walton Harris Walker, and last year received 600 million KRW from the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s special adjustment grant to create a bust and memorial space for General Walker at the site where his battlefield marker is located this month.
Earlier in March, the road area where General Walton Harris Walker died was designated as Walton Harris Walker-gil Honorary Road, and currently, an exhibition space themed on General Walker and the countries that participated in the Korean War is being created at the Peace Culture Base (Madeul-ro 932).
General Walton Harris Walker, commander of the US 8th Army who participated in the Korean War, was a hero of the Korean War who defended the Nakdong River defense line, known as the “Walker Line,” and played a decisive role in the success of the Incheon Landing Operation.
However, on December 23, 1950, while traveling by car to celebrate the awarding of the Eunseong Medal of Honor to his son, Captain Sam Walker, he died in an unexpected accident in Nohae-myeon, Yangju-gun (currently Dobong-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul).
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “The creation of General Walker’s bust and memorial space is not only to remember his spirit but also to remember the war victims and their families and to reflect on the value of peace. The district will do its best to promote related veterans affairs projects so that the spirit of patriotism of General Walker and countless other national heroes can live and breathe in everyday life.”
