Gas Poisoning Is the Leading Cause of Cardiac Arrest

The number of campsites nationwide has steadily increased, nearing 3,600 and setting a record high, while the population enjoying camping has also surpassed 5 million. Among these, it was found that nearly 600 safety accidents occurred during camping last year. There were also 15 cases of cardiac arrest caused by safety accidents during camping.


According to Yonhap News on the 22nd, the Fire Agency responded to a total of 596 incidents related to camping accidents last year. By type of accident, falls were the most common with 208 cases, followed by burns and gas poisoning with 98 and 65 cases respectively. By gender, there were 314 males and 229 females, with males about 1.4 times more than females. By month, August had the highest number of incidents with 81 cases.

Next were May (75 cases), October (67 cases), and September (56 cases) in order of frequency. By age group, 41?50 years old accounted for 122 cases, under 10 years old for 114 cases, and 31?40 years old for 85 cases, showing that incidents frequently occurred among families with members in their 40s and children under 10. By time of day, 9 PM to midnight accounted for 138 cases, 6 PM to 9 PM for 112 cases, and 3 PM to 6 PM for 81 cases, with more than half occurring after 3 PM. There were a total of 15 cardiac arrests caused by camping safety accidents. Among these, 11 cases of gas poisoning were confirmed to have occurred because food was cooked or heating devices were used with charcoal or firewood in enclosed spaces such as tents or camping cars.


The Fire Agency emphasized following safety rules for safe camping activities, including ▲ using night lanterns to prevent falls ▲ prohibiting indoor use of open flames ▲ caution against overheating gas burners. Hong Young-geun, Director of Fire Prevention at the Fire Agency, said, "If people familiarize themselves with safety rules during camping and make safe habits a part of daily life, accidents can be prevented," adding, "The Fire Agency will actively work to reduce safety accidents in daily life through proper safety habits."
