Anthropic, an AI startup considered a rival to OpenAI, has introduced an AI agent that handles tasks on behalf of users.

According to industry sources on the 23rd, Anthropic released a public beta version of the AI agent for developers the day before, which performs complex tasks on a computer like a human. Anthropic plans to make the AI agent service available to consumers and businesses in the coming months or early next year.

Anthropic stated that the AI agent interprets the content on the computer screen, selects buttons, inputs text, and navigates websites autonomously.

The demonstration video showed the AI agent finding a hiking route to take a friend to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It searched on Google to find the hiking path, checked the sunrise time, and sent a calendar invitation with detailed information to the friend. It also included suggestions on what clothes to wear. Apart from the initial prompt input by the user, the AI agent performed all tasks independently without further input.

Jared Kaplan, co-founder of Anthropic, said, "Our feature is basically the first model that can use a computer in the same way we do," adding, "It can perform tasks involving dozens or hundreds of steps." He emphasized that unlike other AI agents, it can process what happens on the user's computer screen in real time.

Anthropic also released its upgraded AI model Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which enhances coding and reasoning capabilities, along with a more affordable and faster version called Claude 3.5 Haiku.

Tech companies are focusing on developing AI agents that can perform complex tasks on behalf of users beyond just providing answers. Google is developing a general-purpose AI agent that can assist in daily life. Additionally, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated, "Our vision is to enable every user to create their own AI agent."

Microsoft (MS) officially launched the Copilot agent last month, an AI agent that operates like a virtual employee automating tasks, and introduced features that allow users to build personalized AI agents.
