Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the 'Re:Green Suraksan Eco Design Festival' at Suraksan Design Street.

The event name 'Re:Green Suraksan Eco Design Festival' combines ‘Re’ and ‘Green,’ conveying the meaning of rethinking sustainability and eco-friendly values from design and ecological perspectives.

The alley near Suraksan, where the event is held, was designated as a ‘Design Street’ in 2009 at the district’s proposal. However, due to the high proportion of restaurants, it has been perceived as a food alley at the entrance of the hiking trail, lacking elements that could be seen as a specialized street.

Accordingly, the district introduced ‘specialized street customized content’ for the Design Street. The approximately 400-meter section from Surakmun near Exit 3 of Suraksan Station, passing through Cheonsangbyeong Park to Surak Happiness Power Plant, will be decorated with various street exhibitions and side events.

First, while walking along the street, visitors can see ▲14 pavilions (temporary buildings) proposing eco-friendly residential forms by student artists from the University Architecture Association ▲20 eco-friendly message typography posters presented by local visual design students from Seoul Women’s University, Induk University, and others.

In connection with this, ▲docent tours ▲and conversations with artists are prepared to enhance understanding of the exhibited works and strengthen communication. Additionally, stamps are placed in front of each pavilion work to add fun and encourage visitors to complete the entire route without leaving.

In front of Surak Happiness Power Plant, works submitted to the Nowon-gu Residents’ Eco-friendly Idea Contest, themed on eco-friendly ideas ranging from personal daily necessities made from recycled materials to eco-friendly practices in everyday life, will be exhibited. Furthermore, on-site voting will be conducted for three days using pre-prepared PET bottle caps, selecting a total of 10 winners who will receive Naver Pay gift certificates.

The district will also operate ‘Eco-friendly DIY Workshops’ including ▲making eco-friendly red bean hand warmers that can be used semi-permanently ▲creating keychains and grip-toks using recycled plastic ▲and producing paper art using various seeds and seasonal materials.

Additionally, near Cheonsangbyeong Park, ▲a flea market booth featuring eco-friendly brands will be operated, and ▲acoustic busking performances by singer-songwriter ‘Gibong’ and acoustic singer ‘Rion’ will be held.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “In modern society where daily waste is increasing day by day, interest and participation in carbon neutrality is an obligation that everyone must join,” adding, “We will prepare various events and programs so that residents can consider and try eco-friendly lifestyles.”
