A man in his 60s who made about 1,500 prank calls to the police station and even assaulted responding officers was arrested by the police.

On the 22nd, Seoul Hyehwa Police Station announced that they have booked and are investigating a man in his 60s, Lee Mo, on charges including violation of the Minor Offenses Act and obstruction of official duties.

According to the police, Lee was making prank calls to the police using public phones and was arrested around 7 a.m. on the 17th near Jongno 5-ga Police Substation in Jongno-gu. At the time of arrest, Lee allegedly punched the responding officers and verbally abused them, saying, "I will sue you" and "I will file a complaint." It was also reported that he shouted loudly and caused a disturbance for about an hour after being taken to the police station.

A police official stated, "We applied for an arrest warrant, but it was dismissed," and added, "We are currently counting the exact number of calls."

If someone makes prank calls or false reports to national institutions or the police, they can be punished under the Minor Offenses Act or for obstruction of official duties by deception under the Criminal Act. Simply falsely reporting a non-existent crime or disaster to a public official constitutes a violation of the Minor Offenses Act, but if the false report causes the public official to mistakenly believe a crime has occurred and take responsive action, it constitutes obstruction of official duties by deception.
