Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States, acknowledged that her husband President Joe Biden's decision to forgo a re-election bid was "the right call."
On the 21st (local time), Jill appeared on ABC News' "Good Morning America" and described the past four years spent at the White House as "the honor of a lifetime," expressing this view. She said, "Stepping back may be difficult, but we are beginning a new chapter in life," emphasizing it as "a new journey." She added, "We have been involved in politics for over 50 years. We are ready for a new journey," and stated, "(Biden's decision to not run for re-election) was the right choice."
According to The Guardian, this is the first time Jill Biden has directly addressed President Biden's withdrawal from the Democratic nomination amid concerns about his age. When the "Biden withdrawal theory" surfaced after the first TV debate between President Biden and former President Donald Trump in June, Jill expressed the stance that "he should stay and fight until the end." However, immediately after President Biden's resignation decision in July, she showed support by retweeting the statement on her social media account with a deep pink heart emoji.
On the same day, Jill also expressed strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the Democratic presidential candidate following President Biden. She said, "She has a lot of energy," and emphasized, "Kamala Harris will win." Harris's campaign reportedly raised nearly $1 billion (about 1.38 trillion won) in election funds in the third quarter alone, as the presidential race, with just about two weeks remaining, is unfolding in an extremely close contest.
Additionally, Jill spoke about the revamp of the White House public tours. As an educator, she explained the reason for the changes, saying, "Walking down these halls every day, I thought 'something more vibrant and alive is needed,'" and added, "It is important to me that people learn about the White House and the presidency. I worked to address this in the tours."
