On the 21st, President Yoon Suk-yeol met with David Lammy, the British Foreign Secretary who visited Korea, to share information on North Korea's recent deployment of troops to Russia and Russia-North Korea military cooperation, agreeing to closely coordinate. Secretary Lammy stated that the UK would actively cooperate with the Republic of Korea against Russia's reckless illegal actions.
President Yoon received Secretary Lammy at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the same day and exchanged views on ways to develop Korea-UK relations, according to the presidential office.
President Yoon expressed hope to further strengthen 'global strategic partnership' cooperation in various fields in accordance with the 'Downing Agreement' agreed upon during his state visit in November last year.
Secretary Lammy said that at a time when the UK is redefining its relationships with major countries, there is no need to establish a new relationship with Korea as the bilateral relations are perfect, and emphasized that as the new secretary, he would actively work for close cooperation between the two countries.
In particular, Secretary Lammy stated, "Russia's reckless illegal actions, including providing forged passports to induce North Korea's troop deployment, seriously threaten the security of Europe and Korea," and added, "The UK will actively cooperate with the Republic of Korea to respond to this, and together with the international community, we will actively seek necessary measures."
President Yoon shared the recent security situation on the Korean Peninsula and responded that he would closely cooperate with the UK and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He especially proposed strategically expanding defense industry cooperation in the naval and air force sectors between Korea and the UK, to which Secretary Lammy actively agreed.
Additionally, Secretary Lammy expressed hope that advanced defense technology cooperation would be strengthened at the Pillar II level between Korea and AUKUS.
Furthermore, President Yoon and Secretary Lammy agreed to link cooperation in developing carbon-free energy to achieve the '2050 Net Zero' goal, as part of efforts to respond to the climate crisis and energy transition, including cooperation in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
