Hwaseong-si "Expecting Revolutionary Improvement in Western Region's Metropolitan Transportation Network"
The extension project of the Sinansan Line subway, connecting Yeouido in Seoul and the International Theme Park in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, has entered the main track.
Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do announced on the 21st that the "Sinansan Line Hyangnam Extension Project" has passed the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The "central investment review" is a procedure to examine the necessity and appropriateness of a project before implementation to prevent indiscriminate overlapping investments through planned and efficient operation of local government budgets.
The Sinansan Line Hyangnam Extension Project, which passed the central investment review this time, is a project to extend the line by 22 km from the International Theme Park to the Hyangnam area. For the Sinansan Line, Section 1 of the main line connects Yeouido, Seoul to Hanyang University in Ansan, and Section 2 branches from Gwangmyeong to the Hwaseong International Theme Park. Among Section 2, the Siheung City Hall to Wonsi section is a shared section with the Seohae Line.
The city explained that with the passage of the central investment review, all preliminary administrative procedures for the full-scale promotion of the Sinansan Line Hyangnam extension have been completed. Accordingly, the city plans to focus all efforts on completing the extension line by December 2028 through procedures such as detailed design, approval of the implementation plan, and construction commencement.
It is expected that once the extension project is completed, the travel time between Hyangnam and Yeouido, which used to take about 1 hour and 40 minutes, will be reduced to 60 minutes, dramatically improving the metropolitan transportation in the western area of the city.
Jung Myung-geun, mayor of Hwaseong-si, said, "The Sinansan Line Hyangnam extension project is the core of metropolitan transportation in the southwestern area of Hwaseong. We will ensure the project opens on time to achieve balanced and sustainable development of Hwaseong-si."
Earlier, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport approved the extension plan of this project proposed by Hwaseong-si in 2022, and last year, the city signed a consignment agreement for this project with the Korea National Railway, Korea Railroad Corporation, and Next Train, the operator of the Sinansan Line.
