A teenage girl in the UK was diagnosed with a stroke as a side effect after taking birth control pills to regulate her menstrual flow.
Recently, the British media outlet The Sun reported that Lauren Jin (17), who was on a family vacation in Spain, experienced paralysis on the entire right side of her body. According to the outlet, Lauren tried to get out of bed but was unable to control her body. She couldn't even speak.
Rushed to the emergency room with the help of her parents, Lauren was diagnosed by doctors with thrombosis caused by combined birth control pills, which led to a stroke. Lauren had been taking birth control pills since she was 13 to manage heavy menstrual bleeding. She recalled, "On the day I had the stroke, my parents said the chances of survival were very low. I couldn't move or speak. I only remember being taken to the emergency operating room."
Subsequent tests revealed that Lauren had patent foramen ovale, a condition where there is a hole in the wall (atrial septum) dividing the right and left atria of the heart. The media reported that this made it easier for blood clots to travel to the brain.
Lauren underwent brain surgery and started rehabilitation treatment. In July last year, she had surgery to close the patent foramen ovale. Now 19 years old, she has returned to a normal life. It is reported that she currently has no significant symptoms except for finger spasms. She has started playing the piano and guitar and is preparing to participate in the 2025 London Marathon. Lauren said, "When I found out that I had blood clots and a heart defect, I thought my life would never be the same again," adding, "It was tough, but those things could not stop my efforts."
Earlier, Hailey Bieber, wife of pop star Justin Bieber, also confessed that she has been suffering from PTSD after experiencing stroke symptoms as a side effect of birth control pills. She, who received hospital treatment for stroke symptoms caused by blood clots, said, "I am anxious because of the fear that it might happen again. It was scarier, more shocking, and more uncomfortable than you can imagine. It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced." Bieber felt abnormal symptoms during a meal and went to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with blood clots and treated. She revealed, "There was a mild blood clot due to lack of oxygen. I was taking birth control pills because of migraines, and the side effects, combined with COVID-19 and a long flight, seemed to have caused the stroke."
