Suseong Webtoon announced on the 21st that it has signed a contract to supply webtoons to Amazon Flipton in Japan. Amazon Flipton is Amazon Japan's digital content distribution platform.
Suseong Webtoon plans to sequentially supply 19 works currently distributed in Japan to Amazon Japan.
According to the Japan Publishing Science Institute, the estimated sales amount of digital comics in Japan last year was about 483 billion yen (approximately 4.3 trillion KRW). This is the first time the size of Japan's digital comic market has exceeded 4 trillion KRW, and the digital comic market in Japan is rapidly growing.
Suseong Webtoon, which has accumulated 1.75 million members in Japan alone, plans to leverage the elevated status of K-webtoons in Japan as a growth momentum following Naver Webtoon's NASDAQ listing this year.
Recently, Suseong Webtoon expanded its stake in its webtoon-specialized subsidiary Toomics to 70.02% and decided to actively foster K-webtoons. Toomics, which has 60 million members worldwide in 11 languages including English, Chinese, and Spanish, considers the Japanese market an especially important base. In fact, since 77% of global comic app revenue is generated in Japan, global big tech companies such as Amazon, Apple, and Rakuten are rushing to enter the Japanese market.
The works supplied by Suseong Webtoon to Amazon Flipton are also serialized on domestic platforms Kakao Page and Naver Webtoon. In particular, "I’m a Villainess but I Picked Up the Male Lead" recorded over 3 million views on Kakao Page alone.
Yu Young-hak, Head of Webtoon Business, said, "This contract was signed to expand local distribution channels and continuously supply works in Japan. Since our full-scale entry into Japan, the number of Japanese subscribers has been steadily increasing every quarter, and we will distribute more works in the future to establish a stable revenue structure in Japan."
Meanwhile, Suseong Webtoon is also reviewing contracts with other overseas platforms besides Japan. After this contract, it plans to pursue agreements with Kakao-affiliated China PODO Manhwa, North American Tapas, and Kakao Webtoon Global in Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia.
