Conducted on Yeoncheon Hantan River Columnar Jointing Trail Course 4... Takes about 2 hours 30 minutes
Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province (Governor Kim Deok-hyun) announced on the 21st that it will hold the ‘Yeoncheon Hantan River Columnar Jointing Trail Walking Event’ on November 2nd.
This event will take place on Course 4 of the Yeoncheon Hantan River Columnar Jointing Trail, starting from Auraji Pillow Lava, passing through Baegui-ri Formation and Hantan River Dam, and continuing to Jaein Waterfall. The course is 7 km long and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete.
Anyone who is able to walk can participate. The number of participants is limited to 300, and applications will be accepted through pre-registration until the 30th. If the number of participants is not met during pre-registration, on-site registration will also be available. The participation fee is 10,000 KRW per person.
Participants will walk along the basalt columnar joints formed by lava flows erupted from Mount Orisan in North Korea about 540,000 to 120,000 years ago, enjoying the outstanding scenery of the basalt gorge. On November 2nd, Saturday, participants will gather at Exit 1 of Jeongok Station at 9 a.m., take a dedicated event bus to Auraji Pillow Lava, and then start the walking event.
Pre-registration for the event can be done through the Naver Smart Store for the ‘2024 Hantan River Columnar Jointing Trail Walking Event’ and via the QR code posted on the poster. Those who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion and a commemorative gift, and participants will also have a chance to win various prizes through a raffle.
An official from Yeoncheon-gun said, “We hope that the Yeoncheon Hantan River Columnar Jointing Trail Walking Event will widely promote the outstanding scenery and geological value of the Hantan River UNESCO Global Geopark and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
Meanwhile, the Hantan River UNESCO Global Geopark was first designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020, successfully re-designated in 2024, and will continue its reputation as a UNESCO Global Geopark until 2027.
