High Praise for Rooftop Rainwater Savings, Utilization of Idle Land as Green Spaces

Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 21st that it was selected as an excellent local government in environmental management in the Ministry of Environment's '11th Green City 2024' contest and received the Minister of Environment's commendation.
The Green City selection project is conducted every two years since 2004 by the Ministry of Environment to officially select local governments with excellent environmental administration foundations and capabilities, aiming to spread environmentally friendly local administration.
This year, 39 local governments nationwide participated in the contest and underwent expert evaluations in a total of 10 items across four categories: ▲urban environment related to resource circulation, water quality, water circulation, green space expansion, and air quality improvement ▲carbon neutrality including climate change mitigation, climate crisis adaptation, expansion of carbon sinks, and promotion of zero-emission vehicles ▲environmental education ▲representative environmental policies of local governments. Ultimately, six local governments were selected.
Goyang Special City received high evaluations for △patent registration of an integrated building greening system using rooftop rainwater storage tanks △various ecological education programs and community activities centered on the Goyang Ecological Education Center △creation of green spaces utilizing idle land along the Gyeongui Line.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “I believe that with this Green City selection, Goyang Special City has been officially recognized as a leading environmental city in South Korea,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to implement sustainable carbon neutrality to set an example as a leading eco-friendly policy city.”
