Presumed Drowned After Getting Caught in a Net
More than 20 gray seals were found dead in a mass die-off in the Baltic Sea, German major broadcasting media reported on the 18th (local time).
According to the Stralsund Marine Museum investigation, at least 25 gray seal carcasses were found along the coast between R?gen Island and Greifswald in northeastern Germany since the beginning of this month. The carcasses showed no noticeable external injuries and appeared to be in good nutritional condition.
In response, the museum suspects that many of the seals drowned after getting caught in nets, as at least three of the lungs were found filled with water. The police have also been requested to investigate.
The gray seal, which can weigh up to 200 kg and grow up to 2.5 meters in length, is a species inhabiting the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Norwegian Sea. Along the German coast, it was nearly extinct since the 1920s but is known to have recovered to about 300 individuals due to government species restoration efforts.
