Samsung Heavy Industries pledged to become a sustainable company for the next 100 years as it celebrates its 50th anniversary on the 19th.
Choi Sung-an, CEO (Vice Chairman) of Samsung Heavy Industries, expressed his thoughts to employees through an internal broadcast on the 18th, saying, "Fifty years ago, when no one paid attention to South Korea, Samsung Heavy Industries rose with a grand vision for the future and has been rewriting the history of global shipbuilding and offshore industries."
Vice Chairman Choi emphasized, "To become a company that is unwavering amid external changes, we must lead innovation and develop smart manufacturing and soft competitiveness. I ask you to lead the company to be agile and flexible, turning imagination into reality."
Founded in 1974 in Changwon, Gyeongnam, as a machinery business, Samsung Heavy Industries merged with Samsung Shipbuilding and Daesung Heavy Industries, both heavy industry affiliates within the Samsung Group, to become a comprehensive heavy industry maker.
In 1994, Samsung Heavy Industries laid the foundation for growth as a global large-scale shipyard by constructing the third dock. After the foreign exchange crisis, the company restructured and improved management efficiency in heavy equipment, power plants, and ship engine businesses, and currently focuses its business areas on shipbuilding and offshore sectors.
A company official said, "The 50th anniversary is a meaningful starting point to prepare for a new future," adding, "We will strive to become a company that leads a new paradigm in the shipbuilding and offshore industry."
