Recruitment of 100 Additional Coffee Shops, Certificate Awarding, and Various Incentives Including Coffee Grounds Recycling Flowerpots Planned
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will expand the 'Seongdong-type Coffee Grounds Recycling Project,' which recycles coffee grounds discharged from coffee shops into recycled plastics, fertilizers, and other resources.
The coffee grounds recycling project, which has been underway since 2021, started with major well-known local coffee shops such as Daerim Warehouse and Blue Bottle, and currently about 200 coffee shops are participating. By recycling discarded coffee grounds into fertilizers or feed, approximately 200 tons of coffee grounds waste are reduced annually, achieving a reduction of about 67 tons in carbon emissions.
Considering that about 338 kg of carbon is generated when 1 ton of coffee grounds is landfilled, this is evaluated as a significant contribution to resource circulation and recycling.
Based on these achievements, Seongdong-gu plans to expand the project by recruiting an additional 100 coffee shops. Coffee shops wishing to participate can apply online via a Google form or by submitting an application form through email on the Seongdong-gu Office website.
Participating coffee shops will be provided with various incentives such as certificates and coffee grounds recycled flowerpots to encourage voluntary participation, thereby further strengthening the local community's resource circulation system.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The Seongdong-type Coffee Grounds Recycling Project is a proactive and preemptive initiative responding to the 2025 ban on landfill acceptance of metropolitan area household waste and the 2050 carbon neutrality declaration under the UN Climate Change Agreement. We will actively support recycling coffee, which is frequently encountered in daily life, to achieve virtuous resource circulation and environmental protection effects.”
