Gyeonggi-do Labor Safety Guardians Launch 'Compliance with Basic Safety Rules' Campaign Oh Hu-seok, Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs of Gyeonggi Province, is taking a commemorative photo with the awardees at the awards ceremony of the "1st Labor Safety and Health Photo and Essay Contest" held on the 16th.

On the 16th, Gyeonggi Province conducted a joint campaign for ‘Labor Safety Day’ to prevent industrial accidents and promote a safety culture, involving 104 labor safety guardians from 31 cities and counties at the Korea Construction Safety Expo held at KINTEX in Goyang City.

Since April this year, the province has designated ‘Labor Safety Day’ every month to create safe industrial sites without serious accidents, continuously carrying out campaign activities with participation from all cities and counties in the province. The theme of the October campaign is ‘Compliance with Basic Safety Rules.’

Every year, 50-60% of accidents and deaths are caused by falls, entrapments, and collisions?accidents that can be prevented simply by following basic safety rules. Therefore, if employers and workers comply with basic safety rules at industrial sites, many accidents and fatalities can be reduced.

Accordingly, labor safety guardians promoted the creation of safe workplaces by distributing promotional materials containing safety rules to visitors at the expo.

About 130 people, including Oh Hu-seok, Deputy Governor for Administration of Gyeonggi Province, and Go Mi-jeong, Director of the Job and Finance Bureau of Goyang City, attended to encourage the labor safety guardians and related personnel and to participate in the joint campaign.

Along with encouraging compliance with basic safety rules through the campaign, the labor safety guardians also examined construction safety equipment widely used at construction sites in the expo exhibition hall and new technologies in the smart safety field.

Before the joint campaign, an awards ceremony was held for the ‘1st Labor Safety and Health Photo and Essay Contest.’ In August, the province held the contest open to the entire nation to raise awareness of industrial safety and promote a safety culture, selecting excellent works that could serve as models in industrial sites. Out of a total of 133 submissions, six works were finally selected after expert review: three photos and three essays.

The grand prize-winning photo, titled ‘A Lifeline,’ depicts safety belts as a lifeline like a ray of light for workers cleaning exterior walls. The excellence award went to the work ‘Compliance with Safety Rules, Prevention of Fall Accidents,’ and the encouragement award was given to the work ‘Safe Cooperative Work.’

Awardees received certificates and prizes from the Governor of Gyeonggi Province, and from October, the works will be exhibited in a traveling exhibition at Gyeonggi Provincial Government and cities and counties.

Oh Hu-seok, Deputy Governor for Administration of Gyeonggi Province, said, “To prevent tragedies like the Hwaseong Arisel factory fire from happening again, Gyeonggi Province, employers, and workers must all take an interest in industrial accidents and continuously focus on preventing safety accidents at industrial sites. We will actively support efforts to make Gyeonggi Province safer and free from industrial accidents.”
