Incheon City Provides Customized Consulting for Type 1 Diabetes Patients... On the 16th of Next Month

Medical Staff Consultation and Medical Device Information Provision

Incheon City will hold a customized consulting session for patients with type 1 diabetes and their families on the 16th of next month at the city hall's main conference room.

The city has invited Professor Kim Jae-hyun from the Department of Pediatrics at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital to provide expert consulting on diabetes management methods, precautions, and a Q&A session. Following this, pharmacist Park Sang-wook, who has type 1 diabetes, will give a lecture titled "How to Live as a Person with Diabetes Without Losing Myself."

Additionally, at the event venue, ten companies that manufacture, import, and sell continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps used by type 1 diabetes patients will operate promotional booths, allowing patients and their families to compare products and receive information on how to use them.

Applications to participate in the consulting session will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for 60 people (up to 2 per household) via the QR code on the poster posted on Incheon City's website from the 25th of this month until the 1st of next month.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces no insulin at all. This differs from type 2 diabetes, where some insulin secretion function remains but insulin resistance increases due to various causes such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress.

While most adults have type 2 diabetes, 90% of patients under 19 years old are type 1. Given the early onset and the lack of a cure to date, it is crucial to alleviate symptoms and minimize the occurrence of complications.

According to data from the National Health Insurance Service, as of 2022, there are 236,807 diabetes patients in Incheon, of which 2,671 are type 1 patients. The diabetes patient rate relative to the total population of Incheon is 7.98%, higher than the national average of 7.69%, ranking second among metropolitan cities after Busan (8.08%).
