Gyeonggi Province has supported the installation of mini solar power systems with a capacity of 3,409 kW in 6,941 households through the ‘One Household, One Power Plant’ mini solar power project from 2021 to 2024.
The ‘One Household, One Power Plant’ mini solar power project is a program that turns homes into power plants by providing subsidies covering 40% from the provincial government and 40-50% from city and county governments, along with some self-payment.
When installing a mini solar power system with a generation capacity of 870W, only 360,000 KRW of the installation cost of 1.8 million KRW needs to be paid by the household.
By installing two mini solar panels producing 435W per hour on a balcony, about 70 kWh of electricity can be generated monthly, saving approximately 19,240 KRW on electricity bills based on the average monthly usage of a four-person household.
Gyeonggi Province explained, "Due to their small size, these can be installed in various spaces, providing not only electricity bill savings but also energy welfare for socially vulnerable groups, free mobile phone charging, and energy education effects."
Next year, Gyeonggi Province plans to promote a project supporting the installation costs of solar power facilities in common areas such as rooftops or walls of apartment complexes through the ‘RE100 Apartment Support Project’.
Earlier, in April last year, the province announced the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Vision,’ aiming to increase the share of renewable energy generation to 30%, and established climate crisis response strategies across four sectors: public, corporate, residents, and industry. In line with this, the ‘100,000 Households Power Self-Reliance Project’ is underway, targeting the installation of residential solar power systems in 100,000 households by 2030.
Kim Yeon-ji, Director of the Energy Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The mini solar power project has shown significant effects in alleviating electricity bill burdens during this year’s heatwave," adding, "We plan to link this with the installation of communal solar power generators utilizing apartment rooftops so that more residents can benefit from electricity bill savings."
