Mapo-gu Attaches Internet of Things (IoT) Sensors to Aging Hazardous Buildings

Real-time Building Risk Management Through Smart IoT Measurement Sensor Attachment
Expansion of Safety Management System to Disaster-risk Facilities Including Vacant Houses and Retaining Walls by 2025

Mapo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Gang-su) is launching the establishment of an Internet of Things (IoT) measurement management system to ensure the safety management of aging hazardous buildings.

To address the safety management vulnerabilities of aging private buildings, smart IoT measurement sensors will be utilized to scientifically analyze disaster risk levels and enable rapid response.

The project targets nine hazardous buildings over 30 years old within the area, including Gongdeok Market and Mapo Market.

IoT measurement sensors with distributed identifiers will be attached to the designated hazardous buildings to collect real-time data on building tilt and cracks, which will be used to analyze risk levels.

In particular, if the building's tilt or cracks exceed the risk threshold, an automatic alert message will be sent to the responsible department and building manager, allowing for prompt preemptive measures.

Additionally, the real-time collected data will be stored on a blockchain network to enhance the reliability of measurement data management.

This will prevent data tampering and falsification, and enable accurate identification of causes and circumstances in case of accidents, playing a crucial role in future facility management and the establishment of recurrence prevention measures.

The district plans to further expand this initiative next year. By 2025, IoT smart sensors will be additionally installed on hazardous buildings (D and E grades), including vacant houses, disaster-risk facilities, retaining walls, and artificial slopes, to strengthen the safety management system.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “We will do our best to expand the digital-based smart safety management system to protect the precious lives and property of our residents from disaster risks.”
