On the 15th, the Gwangsan District Council of Gwangju (Chairman Kim Myung-su) adopted the "Resolution Urging the Prompt Establishment of the Gwangsan Office of Education," which was proposed by Representative Yoon Young-il (Democratic Party, Bia-dong, Singa-dong, Sinchang-dong) at the 1st plenary session of the 292nd extraordinary meeting.
The resolution strongly calls for cooperation and solidarity among the government, the National Assembly, and the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education to promptly establish the Gwangsan Office of Education.
The Gwangsan Office of Education has been absorbed and integrated into the Western Office of Education since 1988 when Gwangsan District was incorporated into Gwangju City, and currently, the Western Office of Education oversees Seo-gu, Nam-gu, including Gwangsan District.
Representative Yoon Young-il pointed out, "This year, there are a total of 14 overcrowded schools in Gwangsan District, and urgent improvements to the educational environment are needed due to the issue of students exceeding the class capacity." He added, "In particular, complaints from parents about difficulties in commuting to and from school due to long-distance assignments to other districts are incessant."
He continued, "Gwangsan District is a mixed urban-rural city with multicultural students accounting for half of Gwangju, so an educational environment reflecting these special characteristics is necessary." He explained, "While the Eastern Office of Education oversees 217 schools, the Western Office of Education manages 368 schools, making it difficult to provide the necessary education and causing a serious workload."
The resolution adopted on this day is scheduled to be delivered to the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the National Assembly, the National Assembly, each political party, and relevant government ministries.
On the same day, the Gwangsan District Council also passed a proposal urging measures to stabilize rice prices and a resolution urging the government’s response to the "One Year Since Japan’s Radioactive Water Discharge."
