A 5-year-old boy fell into a sinkhole (a large hole or depression formed on the ground due to subsidence), but was safely rescued thanks to his mother’s quick actions.
According to the UK Daily Mail on the 10th (local time), recently in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, a woman in her 40s was taking her 5-year-old son to kindergarten in a vehicle when a sudden sinkhole appeared, causing the vehicle to fall in. Nearby CCTV footage captured the road collapsing and the vehicle they were in sinking into the hole. Without hesitation, the woman threw herself into the hole to save her son.
The woman and child were safely rescued with the help of the driver of a garbage collection truck parked beside the vehicle and nearby citizens. Although the vehicle was severely damaged from the fall, no major casualties were reported. Romanian authorities determined that the sinkhole was caused by ground erosion due to leakage from an underground pipeline.
Meanwhile, sinkhole incidents have been occurring not only overseas but also domestically. On the 21st of last month, a large ground subsidence measuring approximately 10 meters wide, 5 meters long, and 8 meters deep occurred on a road in Sasang-gu, Busan. During this incident, a drainage vehicle from the Busan Fire Headquarters that was supporting drainage on the road and a passing 5-ton truck fell into the hole. Fortunately, no casualties resulted from the accident, and the police controlled the area around the accident site while the local district office managed the recovery. In the Sasang-gu area, sinkholes have occurred repeatedly in April, May, July, and August of this year, increasing citizens’ anxiety.
