On the 13th, Vietnamese media outlet ‘docnhanh’ reported, "On the 10th (local time), an incident occurred where a leech was found inside the nose of an Indonesian boy."

According to the media, the boy had been experiencing breathing difficulties for about a month and visited the hospital. Although he received treatment whenever he had pain in his nose, his symptoms did not improve. During a recent hospital visit, an endoscopic examination was conducted, and medical staff discovered a living leech attached inside the boy’s nose.

The medical team immediately removed the leech from the boy’s nose using tweezers. The leech was alive and continued to wriggle actively even after being taken out. It is estimated that the leech survived by attaching itself inside the boy’s nose and sucking blood for about a month. The medical staff stated, “Leeches can enter the body through contact with contaminated water,” and advised, “Caution is necessary when working in rivers and rice paddies.”

Domestic netizens who came across this story expressed various reactions such as "I feel pain just hearing this," "Glad the child is safe," "Feels like watching some people parasitize the nation," "The child’s parents must be very thankful to the medical staff who found the cause," "How painful and frustrating it must have been," "Creepy that it lived for a whole month," and "Something you’d only see in movies."

Meanwhile, in 2022, a new species of leech was discovered in a domestic reservoir. The Ewha Womans University Eco Science Research Institute announced that in the summer of the same year, "Three leeches were found on a soft-shelled turtle captured in a reservoir in the Gurye area of Jeollanam-do." This leech is an unidentified new species that had never been found in Korea before. If bitten by this leech, the bitten area may develop red rashes, swelling, and itching due to allergic reactions.
