Promotion of Private Investment Project for Yongin~Gwangju Expressway
November Public Hearing Scheduled on Traffic Congestion Improvement Plan for Seohyeon-ro
Discussion on Solutions for Local Issues in Gwangju and Yongin Starting from Seongnam City
Gyeonggi Province entered into a working-level consultation with Seongnam City on the 11th to address the issue of increased congestion around Seohyeon-ro in Seongnam due to the promotion of the Yongin-Gwangju Expressway private investment project.
Seohyeon-ro in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, is currently a habitual congestion zone, and Gyeonggi Province is reviewing measures to alleviate congestion on Seohyeon-ro prior to advancing the project.
Residents have continuously raised complaints that the congestion will worsen if the expressway is newly constructed, given the current severe congestion at the Seodang Intersection and the connected Taejae Hill area.
The province held a public review of the draft Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment and a residents' briefing session in June, but due to additional requests for explanations from residents who did not attend the briefing, an additional public hearing is planned for next month.
At the public hearing, the province plans to specifically explain the measures to improve vehicle congestion on Seohyeon-ro, noting that once the Yongin-Gwangju Expressway is completed, connectivity with the Seoul-Sejong Expressway via Mohyeon IC will be strengthened, which could help alleviate congestion on Seohyeon-ro.
Gyeonggi Province will establish a cooperative system with Yongin City, Gwangju City, and Seongnam City regarding road construction and will sufficiently reflect each city's traffic issues in the expressway plan.
A Gyeonggi Province official stated, "The Yongin-Gwangju Expressway project is expected to contribute to improving vehicle congestion and the development of the southern Gyeonggi region. We will promote improvement measures to minimize vehicle congestion caused by road construction," adding, "We will ensure that the opinions of local residents are actively reflected."
