Assemblyman Lee Yong-woo "Thorough Management Needed"
This year, it has been confirmed that there were 2,816 hacking attempts targeting the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) using overseas Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
According to the office of Lee Yong-woo, a member of the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, the number of hacking attempts on the KMA was 4,414 in 2021, 4,145 in 2022, 3,765 in 2023, and 2,816 up to September 2024.
By country, over the past four years, China accounted for the highest share at 30.9% (4,682 cases), followed by the United States at 15.7% (2,392 cases), and India at 8.4% (1,271 cases).
Rep. Lee stated, "If information is leaked due to hacking of the KMA, which possesses South Korea's only weather forecasting system and meteorological data, it would cause tremendous national damage," and emphasized, "Thorough management is necessary regarding the continuous hacking attempts originating from overseas IPs."
