Bucheon City Concludes Public Briefing on Science High School Establishment... "Transforming into a Cultural Science City"

On the 10th, Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province held a public briefing session at the auditorium of Ojeong District Office to promote the establishment of Bucheon Science High School.

Co-hosted by the Bucheon Office of Education and Bucheon High School, this briefing was the third following sessions in Sosa District and Wonmi District last month. About 180 citizens attended, where Professor Lee Jung-kyu of Seokyeong University gave a lecture on the topic of "The Necessity of Nurturing Scientific Talent."

At the citizen briefing session held on the 10th at the main auditorium of Ojeong District Office, attendees including Jo Yong-ik, Mayor of Bucheon, are holding hand placards that read "Gyeonggi-type Science High School, Now Bucheon!" to wish for the establishment of the science high school.

Professor Lee cited the example of the Israel Arts and Science Academy (IASA), emphasizing that "at this point in time when advanced science and technology are developing, nurturing creative and convergent talent is essential." He also explained, "Since Bucheon already has sufficient cultural and artistic infrastructure, the establishment of Bucheon Science High School will foster creative talents where science and arts converge."

Following this, Kim Young-chan, principal of Bucheon High School, stated, "Through the conversion of Bucheon High School into a science high school, we can provide high-quality science education opportunities to students in Bucheon and prevent the outflow of outstanding talents to other regions." He added, "This is an active response to changes such as the decline in the school-age population."

Bucheon Mayor Cho Yong-ik also emphasized the necessity of establishing the science high school, saying, "How we nurture talent for Bucheon's future is a very important issue, and through the science high school, we can transform from a cultural creative city to a cultural science city."

Meanwhile, this public briefing session was organized by Bucheon City to build community consensus on the establishment of the science high school, following the "Gyeonggi-type Science High School New Designation Contest Plan" announced by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education last month. Over three sessions, more than 500 citizens visited the venues.
