November 30 WBA Asia Women's Minimumweight Title Match
Opponent is World Champion Park Hyesu... Winner Advances to World Championship
'Doctor Boxer' Seo Ryeo-kyung, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Soonchunhyang University, is making a comeback to challenge for the boxing world championship.
On the 11th, the Korea Boxing Commission announced that on November 30th, a World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia female minimumweight title match will be held in Okcheon. In this match, Professor Seo will face Park Hye-su (Byeon Gyoseon Daejeon Boxing Club). The winner will advance to compete in a major world championship title match organized by the WBA and others next year. This match is essentially the first gateway to becoming a world champion.
Expectations are high as both fighters are making a comeback to the top. In March, Professor Seo challenged Yoshikawa Ryuuna of Japan for the WIBA (Women's International Boxing Association) minimumweight world title but failed to secure the title due to a draw. On August 15th, she also recorded a draw in a Korea-Japan match against Maehara Kanae (Japan), marking two consecutive draws.
Her opponent, Park, born in 1988, is a former track and field athlete. She debuted as a professional boxer in May 2009. In November 2017, Park became the WBF (World Boxing Federation) International light flyweight champion, gaining recognition as a world champion. Later, in October 2019, she challenged for the WIBA super flyweight world title but ended the match in a 10-round draw against Kao Jin-yen (China). As a 'mom boxer' balancing motherhood and her career, she once attracted media attention. She continues to work as both a gym owner and a boxer, showing her passion for boxing. In May, in Goheung, she demonstrated her enduring skills by knocking out Kanyarat Nunoi (Thailand) in the 3rd round.
Professor Seo, born in 1991, is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital and the Korea Boxing Commission (KBM) light flyweight champion. She started boxing in 2019 upon a friend's recommendation while working as a doctor and debuted as a professional boxer in 2020. Since then, she has balanced her career as a doctor and boxer, earning the nickname 'Doctor Boxer.' In July 2023, just three years after her professional debut, she became the KBM female light flyweight champion while still an active physician, showing rapid progress. Her signature skill is a powerful punch that stands out remarkably compared to other fighters.
