A Malaysian couple is gaining attention for gifting iPhones to their housemaids who have been with them for years.

According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 8th, the couple Jeff Leon and Intira Kalanjiam shared a video on their YouTube channel on the 21st of last month showing them giving iPhones to their Indonesian housemaids Sri and Neneng. The housemaids had been responsible for household chores including cooking and taking care of the couple’s two young children for two years.

In the video, the two housemaids screamed excitedly upon receiving the gifts. Especially Neneng shed tears of joy, saying, "I can't believe it. Thank you so much." Leon said, "You are no longer just housemaids but members of our family." The video capturing this moment has surpassed 140,000 views and received positive responses. Kalanjiam explained to SCMP, "In Malaysia, housemaids are sometimes not allowed to own mobile phones to prevent them from running away," adding, "Sri and Neneng live freely at home and have enough leisure time." She continued, "Everyone deserves equal treatment regardless of their job," and said, "My housemaids work hard. There is no reason to treat them unkindly."

Netizens who saw the video responded with comments such as "Truly a wonderful mindset," "What a great fortune to have such employers," "Applause to the couple who sincerely treat everyone," and "It breaks my heart that most housemaids work in poor conditions. I hope changes happen."

Meanwhile, SCMP cited government statistics reported by the Malaysian local media New Naratif, stating that more than 94,000 migrant workers are employed as housemaids in Malaysia, most of whom are from Indonesia and the Philippines.
