The police have decided not to prosecute Park Eun-jung, a member of the Joguk Innovation Party, who was accused of spreading false information by denying allegations of preferential treatment for her spouse during the last general election.
On the 10th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that it made the decision not to prosecute Park, who was accused of spreading false information under the Public Official Election Act, on the 27th of last month.
Lee Jong-bae, a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council from the People Power Party, filed a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, alleging that Park, who was the number one proportional representative candidate of the Joguk Innovation Party, spread false information by denying the controversy that her spouse, lawyer Lee Jong-geun, received preferential treatment after retiring as a chief prosecutor. The prosecution transferred the case to the police, and the investigation was conducted by the Yeongdeungpo Police Station.
When Park registered as a candidate in the last general election, she reported a total couple's assets of 4,982 million KRW. However, there was controversy as the assets reportedly increased by about 4.1 billion KRW from 875 million KRW declared in May last year, right after lawyer Lee retired as chief prosecutor, raising suspicions that he received large fees due to preferential treatment. Park rebutted the allegations of preferential treatment for her spouse, saying, "Do you think a 'pro-Moon Jae-in (Pro-Moon Jae-in)' prosecutor could receive preferential treatment under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration?"
