Resident Long-Standing Request Resolved with Approval of 'Danggogae Station' Name Revision Initiated Since 2008
Transportation Facilities Including Route Maps and Signboards to Be Replaced and Updated with New Station Name
Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that the proposed name change for Danggogae Station has passed the review by the Seoul City Place Names Committee.
The district has been promoting the revision of the station name 'Danggogae Station' since the first half of this year. In March, 30 candidates, including 'Bulamsan Station,' were submitted through a naming contest for residents. After gathering residents' opinions and undergoing the Place Names Committee's review, 'Bulamsan Station' was selected as the final candidate.
Bulamsan is the most prominent natural terrain near Danggogae Station and a symbolic presence in the area, with more than half of the residents preferring this name.
The name Danggogae originated from the old Seonghwangdang (Seonangdang) shrine and has been criticized for perpetuating an outdated image of the area.
Accordingly, the need arose to revise the name to reflect the changed environment of the new Sanggye-dong.
Especially during the residents' opinion collection process from May to July, a consensus on the necessity of the station name change was formed mainly among residents newly moved into the redeveloped residential complexes. Residents expressed that the name Danggogae does not represent the area and is inappropriate to show the developed image of Sanggye-dong.
Nowon-gu actively proceeded with the station name change process reflecting these residents' voices, resulting in passing the Seoul City Place Names Committee review on the 23rd of last month.
The name change to 'Bulamsan Station' will be officially announced in the city gazette by the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Urban Railway Division. Subsequently, related procedures will be carried out to replace station nameplates, signposts, markers, and route maps reflecting the new name to ensure no inconvenience to passengers. Promotion and guidance will also be strengthened to prevent confusion among users.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Just as Seongbuk Station was renamed to Gwangwoon University Station in 2013, this decision is also a reasonable one reflecting the changed environment and circumstances of the area. To minimize residents' confusion caused by the station name change, we will diligently carry out the remaining procedures and do our best in the replacement work of signposts, markers, route maps, and in promotion.”
