Dissolution of the House of Representatives After About 3 Years
Japan's House of Representatives (Lower House) was dissolved on the 9th, leading to an early general election scheduled for the 27th.
Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru held an extraordinary cabinet meeting on the morning of the same day and decided to dissolve the House of Representatives. Subsequently, Nukaga Fukushiro, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, read the proclamation at the plenary session in the afternoon, officially declaring the dissolution.
The dissolution of Japan's House of Representatives is the first in about three years since October 14, 2021, during the previous Kishida Fumio Cabinet. The term of office for members of the House of Representatives is originally four years.
Prime Minister Ishiba dissolved the House of Representatives just eight days after taking office, marking the shortest period from the start of a cabinet since World War II. Ishiba was elected as the president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on the 27th of last month and was appointed prime minister by the National Diet on the 1st of this month.
Following the dissolution, a public notice announcing the start of the election will be issued on the 15th of this month, and the early general election will be held on the 27th. Kyodo News reported, "Holding a general election just 26 days after the prime minister's inauguration is also the shortest case since the postwar period."
