Due to the popularity of the self-defense special lecture conducted for over 200 people in the first half of the year, training will continue in the second half
Special techniques and tools-free crisis response methods using your own body
“In emergency situations, I gained confidence by knowing the opponent's weaknesses and how to respond. To make my body react naturally in real situations, I think it is important to practice repeatedly through regular lectures.”
Encouraged by the positive responses from the participants, Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Junhee) will continue to offer the ‘Visiting Self-Defense Special Lecture’ in the second half of the year to guide residents on how to protect themselves.
The district has been operating self-defense special lectures since September 2023 to protect residents' lives from the frequently occurring indiscriminate crimes.
In the first half of this year, education was provided to about 200 people to strengthen residents' crime response abilities and alleviate their anxiety about exposure to crime.
In the second half of this year, the district will visit all 21 neighborhoods in Gwanak-gu to conduct self-defense training. The two-hour special lecture consists of self-defense theory and practical training.
Residents first learn warming-up and shield blocking techniques through the self-defense theory lecture. In the following practical training, they learn how to respond to crisis situations by using their bodies without special skills or tools, including counterattacks using fists and feet, 8-direction strikes, and knife blocks using short stick techniques.
Considering that most participants are beginners unfamiliar with self-defense, the district plans to enhance the educational effect by tailoring the practical training to the residents’ level.
The self-defense special lectures held at the community centers of the 21 neighborhoods in Gwanak-gu will be conducted sequentially from October 21 to November 22. Residents who wish to participate can apply at their respective neighborhood community centers starting October 7, and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
District Mayor Park Junhee said, “Having the ability to protect your own body is an important first step toward creating a safe society. I hope this self-defense special lecture will help residents develop their crime response skills and alleviate some of their anxiety about danger.”
