Naver "Under Review for Changes" on Mandatory Agreement for Member Content AI Usage Terms

Naver "Under Review for Changes" on Mandatory Agreement for Member Content AI Usage Terms

Naver announced that it is reviewing changes to the terms and conditions that require users to provide content they produce for artificial intelligence (AI) training.

On the 8th, Ha Jung-woo, head of Naver Cloud AI Innovation Center, explained at the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee’s audit, "From Naver’s perspective, the terms are intended for users’ convenience, but users may see it differently, and the Fair Trade Commission feels the same way, so we are internally reviewing revisions."

Naver currently requires users to agree mandatorily to terms that allow the use of user-generated content such as blog and cafe posts as AI training data when signing up.

Democratic Party lawmaker Park Min-gyu questioned the terms, asking, "Why does Naver uniquely force exclusive use of information upon membership registration?" He added, "It looks negative to monopolize content related to AI and build barriers." He also noted, "The Fair Trade Commission is reportedly investigating violations of the terms law."

Center head Ha said, "We fully understand the concerns," and added, "While Google takes legal risks, we (Naver) proceed with AI training after obtaining clear legal consent from members, so please understand it that way."
