Prosecution Seeks 2-Year Prison Sentence in Appeal Trial for 30s Suspect in Eunpyeong-gu Residential Area Stabbing Rampage

On the 8th, the prosecution requested a 2-year prison sentence at the first appellate trial of Jeong (38) held at the Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 2-1 (Chief Judge Lee Juhyun).

Jeong was caught in the act last August in a residential area in Galhyeon-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, for wandering around with a weapon and confronting the police (special obstruction of official duties). Jeong threatened self-harm by brandishing the weapon, but there were no casualties.

Jeong's defense attorney said, "The defendant humbly accepted the original court's judgment and did not appeal, and sincerely feels sorry to the injured police officers," and requested the dismissal of the appeal, stating, "When the police arrived at the scene, the defendant was flustered and did not drop the knife but acted passively to prevent the police from coming closer rather than attacking."

In May, the first trial court sentenced Jeong to 8 months in prison with a 2-year probation. The prosecution appealed, stating, "The defendant's crime is serious as he wielded two large knives and caused about 40 police officers to be dispatched."
