Ulsan Office of Education is holding an unveiling ceremony for a commemorative plaque honoring independence activists.
Approximately 70 people participated in the event, including Superintendent Cheon Changsoo, Ulsan City education committee members, and descendants of the independence activists. Superintendent Cheon expressed his gratitude by presenting commemorative plaques to the descendants of the independence activists.
The Ulsan Office of Education created commemorative symbols to honor the achievements of independence activists from the Ulsan region, including Choi Hyunbae, an activist in the field of education, as well as Park Jemin, Seong Sebin, An Taero, Lee Mujong, Lee Hyojeong, and Cho Hyeongjin.
The commemorative plaques, made with portrait reliefs and information patterns (QR codes), were installed on the first floor of the Student Education and Culture Center, which is frequently visited by students. Portrait plaques were also installed at the alma maters of Park Jemin and Choi Hyunbae (Eonyang Elementary School and Byeongyeong Elementary School), whose schools of origin have been confirmed.
This event is an extension of the Ulsan Education Independence Movement Memorial Project, which began in 2019, and was held under the theme “Today’s Students Remember Their Teachers of the Past: The Third Story.”
In 2019, to mark the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Movement, the Ulsan Office of Education selected five education sector independence activists from Ulsan (Seong Sebin, An Taero, Lee Mujong, Lee Hyojeong, and Cho Hyeongjin), created portraits and information boards, and installed a permanent exhibition within the office. In 2022, Park Jemin and Choi Hyunbae were additionally selected, and their portraits and QR codes were installed in front of the Oesol Conference Room at the Ulsan Office of Education, continuing efforts to honor and carry on the legacy of these independence activists.
An official from the Ulsan Office of Education stated, “In celebration of the 578th Hangul Day, we organized this event to honor the noble intentions of the independence activists who dedicated themselves to education and national enlightenment, and to pass on their spirit to students. We plan to continue promoting various educational projects to inherit the history of the independence movement in Ulsan.”
