The Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas claimed that the death toll from the war in the Gaza Strip has surpassed 41,000.
According to major foreign media on the 7th (local time), marking the first anniversary of the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health, governed by Hamas, issued a statement reporting a total of 41,909 deaths and 97,303 injuries during the war. This averages about 115 deaths and 266 injuries per day. Approximately 7% of the pre-war Gaza Strip population (about 2.1 million) have been killed or injured over the past year.
The Gaza Strip Ministry of Health does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its casualty count. On the same day, the Israeli military separately announced that it had killed about 17,000 members of Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, over the past year. It also added that during Hamas's surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, 1,200 Israelis were killed and 251 were abducted, and since then, a total of 728 Israeli soldiers have died.
