Gyeonggi Paju City announced on the 7th that it will hold the 34th Yulgok Cultural Festival on the 12th and 13th to honor the virtue of Yulgok Yi I, a great Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, and to revisit his values through various cultural and artistic events.
This year's Yulgok Cultural Festival will feature a range of cultural and artistic events at the Paju Yi I Historic Site, including traditional ceremonies such as the Chuhyangje memorial rite, Confucian processions, Daedongnori folk play, and traditional weddings, as well as fusion gugak (traditional Korean music), crossover performances, and historical musicals that seek connections with the modern era.
Experience programs include ongoing activities such as folk game experiences, pressed flower art, and making hanji (traditional Korean paper) mirrors. Reservation-based programs include Yullan experiences, tours of Jaun Seowon Confucian Academy, and historical tours related to Yulgok Yi I, all designed for family visitors.
On the 11th, starting at 6:30 PM, a pre-festival event will be held at the grassy plaza of Unjeong Lake Park to mark the beginning of the Yulgok Cultural Festival. The pre-festival will feature fusion music performances, the Paju City Art Troupe’s Yulgok Yi I musical, and performances by gugak singer Song Sohee, among others.
Additionally, to provide citizens with a rich cultural experience, the city has designated the period from the 7th to the 13th as "Yulgok Cultural Week," during which various cultural events will take place throughout Paju City, including the Yulgok Art Competition Exhibition, Yulgok Yi I Talk Concert, the musical "Yi I," and traditional culture preservation village projects.
Kim Kyung-il, Mayor of Paju City, said, “We ask for many visits to the 34th Yulgok Cultural Festival, which honors the virtue of the scholar and continues to preserve his spirit.”
