Priority Application to 4 Types of Dimsum... Expansion to Other Products
10% Reduction in Plastic Usage, Enhanced Cushioning and Cooling Effects
Annual Goal to Save 10 Tons of Plastic
Dongwon F&B announced on the 7th that it will be the first in Korea to introduce eco-friendly packaging material, micro-foamed film, for four types of dim sum packaging.
The micro-foamed film being introduced is a material in which nitrogen is injected into plastic film, the main raw material of flexible packaging, to form uniform microbubbles. Flexible packaging consists of multilayer composite materials with flexibility, such as plastic film, nylon, and aluminum foil. Applying this can enhance cushioning and cooling effects, and by lightening the plastic material, it can reduce the annual plastic usage by an average of more than 10%.
This project is part of the 'Less Plastic' campaign to reduce the use of plastic in food packaging. Dongwon Food Science Institute's packaging development team under Dongwon F&B, affiliate Dongwon Systems, and film manufacturing specialist Samdong Industry collaborated. Each company cooperated throughout the entire process from planning, research and development, to production to reduce plastic usage while maintaining product quality and durability.
Since August, Dongwon F&B has applied micro-foamed film to its steady-selling dim sum products. The company has set a goal to expand this to various flexible packaging for frozen foods and other products, aiming to reduce annual plastic usage by about 10 tons.
A Dongwon F&B representative said, "We are making every effort to discover elements that can reduce carbon emissions at every stage, from raw materials to distribution and packaging." He added, "We plan to actively participate in carbon neutrality by applying eco-friendly packaging to more products in the future."
