The ‘Changneungcheon Cosmos Festival’ will be held for two days from the 12th to the 13th at Changneungcheon in Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province. The cosmos flower field, created together with local residents at Gangmaeseokgyo Park, is in full bloom with orange and pink cosmos flowers over an area of 27,000㎡. This year’s festival, themed ‘Retro! Cosmos Festival’ with added retro content, will feature a variety of 70s and 80s programs including a DJ talk show, nostalgic traditional games, performances, and a food market, creating a festive atmosphere.
Lee Dong-hwan, mayor of Goyang Special City, said, “Gangmaeseokgyo Park, located downstream of Changneungcheon, Goyang’s representative river, is a four-season flower spot where a canola flower festival is held in spring and a cosmos festival in autumn. This cosmos festival has been prepared with a retro concept so that visitors can feel the memories and romance of autumn. We hope everyone enjoys a special autumn.”
Changneungcheon Gangmaeseokgyo Park Filled with Cosmos... Enjoy the Deepening Autumn
Changneungcheon, where canola flowers bloom in spring and cosmos in autumn, has established itself as a famous autumn flower spot continuing the reputation of Goyang City as the city of flowers. The venue for the cosmos festival is Changneungcheon Gangmaeseokgyo Park, located at Gangmaeseokgyo, the oldest stone bridge in Goyang City built in 1920.
At 3 p.m. on the 12th, the opening ceremony held at the central plaza will feature a performance where participants unfold brightly colored handkerchiefs carrying congratulatory messages for the cosmos festival commemorating a space of memories and romance. Before the opening ceremony, the Goyang Special City Taekwondo demonstration team will announce the start of the festival with powerful kicks.
This year’s cosmos festival offers various retro-style programs so that families, mothers, fathers, and children can experience the nostalgia of the 70s and 80s on the cosmos flower field stage. There is a corner where visitors can try on 70s and 80s retro costumes, and professional photographers will take nostalgic black-and-white photos throughout the festival site.
As the festival is held at Changneungcheon, Goyang’s representative river, the operating booths will provide plogging kits to the first 20 people each day to participate in environmental cleanup along the cosmos flower field.
On both sides of the central plaza, a wide cosmos flower field blends orange and pink hues. The walking paths are smoothly maintained so that visitors with strollers or the elderly can safely enjoy the area, and about 600 solar-powered night lights will be installed in sections to offer a different atmosphere at night. The cosmos at Gangmaeseokgyo Park, where the festival is held, is expected to last until early November, allowing free viewing of cosmos even on weekdays.
Retro Programs Capturing Memories and Fun: DJ Talk Show, Traditional Games, Acoustic Performances
At the central plaza, experience programs and traditional games will be held from midnight to 5 a.m. on the 12th and 13th. On the stage surrounded by cosmos, a DJ talk show will be held featuring music that strongly evokes the retro atmosphere of the 70s and 80s, with the DJ sharing stories received on-site. Visitors can also enjoy gentle folk songs and acoustic band performances while sitting in the shaded stage seating, accompanied by the autumn breeze.
Especially, a traditional games area will be set up in the middle of the event site where visitors can enjoy nostalgic traditional games. Skilled staff will lead competitions in eraser fights, “ttangttameokgi” (territory claiming game), marble games, gonggi (a traditional Korean game similar to jacks), “alkkagi” (egg tapping), and “ttakjichigi” (playing with folded paper cards). Experience programs such as balsam flower dyeing, face painting, caricature drawing, tarot card reading, and drone experiences are also prepared.
Additionally, at Gangmae Market operated by local residents, visitors can find food prepared by residents of Gangmae Village and Maehwa Village such as noodles, jeon (Korean pancakes), and acorn jelly, as well as local foods produced by the community.
Visitors using cars during the festival can park at the free parking lot next to Gangmaeseokgyo Park (652-2 Gangmae-dong). For public transportation, take bus 030 from Hwajeong Station or Haengsin Station and get off at Ganggosan stop, then walk about 5 minutes. Walking from Gangmae Station along Haengjunuri-gil takes about 30 minutes.
Haengju is Art, Autumn Flower Festival, Lake Art Festival... Enjoy Goyang’s Autumn Together
During the festival period, various other festivals where visitors can fully enjoy autumn in Goyang will also be held around Gangmaeseokgyo Park.
At Haengjusanseong Fortress, which extends along Gangmaeseokgyo, the ‘Haengju is Art’ festival is ongoing until the 13th. From the Daechupmun Gate to Chungui-jeong Pavilion at Haengjusanseong, various experiences and moonlight tours continue, and reaching the summit offers a night view selected as one of Korea’s top 100 nightscapes last year.
If you want to enjoy the autumn flower atmosphere more, you can visit the Autumn Flower Festival at Ilsan Lake Park, ongoing until the 13th. Besides cosmos, you can freely stroll through gardens filled with various seasonal flowers such as zinnia and chrysanthemums, and at the Goyang Flower Market, you can purchase affordable autumn flowers produced by local farms.
At Ilsan Lake Park, the Goyang Lake Art Festival (11th?13th) and Ilsan Yeolmu Kimchi Festa (12th?13th) will also kick off. Along the street from Ilsan Lake Park to Ilsan Culture Plaza, over 50 groups will perform rich street art shows, and at the theme plaza of Ilsan Lake Park, visitors can taste and experience various kimchi made from Ilsan Yeolmu, a Goyang City specialty agricultural product designated as Geographical Indication No. 115.
