Promotion of BESS Projects in Japan
Aiming to Lead the Renewable Energy Market
LS Electric is teaming up with Kyudenko, a subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power in Japan, to actively target the Japanese battery energy storage system (BESS) market.
On the 7th, LS Electric announced that it recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for BESS business cooperation at a hotel in Gangnam, Seoul, attended by Koo Ja-kyun, Chairman of LS Electric, and Masaki Jono, Vice President of Kyudenko. Kyudenko is an electrical construction specialist subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power headquartered in Fukuoka. It is also promoting a large-scale renewable energy project, the 470MW-class Ukujima solar power plant, the largest in the region.

LS Electric has been cooperating with Kyudenko by supplying power equipment and systems for the Ukujima project. It is the only Korean company supplying power equipment and systems such as voltage-type high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformers and RMUs (Ring Main Units) for the Ukujima project. Through this agreement, both companies plan to cooperate more closely to expand the BESS business.
Kyudenko will oversee the entire process from site discovery for BESS construction, obtaining various permits and certifications, to system design, grid connection and integration, construction, and operation. LS Electric will produce and supply all solutions including power conversion systems (PCS), batteries, and power facilities required for BESS. Based on its successful experience in building a 1.4GWh scale BESS project in Korea, it plans to provide optimal solutions.
Since the Fukushima nuclear accident, the share of renewable energy generation in Japan has increased significantly, highlighting the importance of BESS projects that can manage it stably and efficiently. The Japanese government and local governments are actively supporting BESS projects, and LS Electric and Kyudenko are expected to play a leading role in this rapidly growing market.
Jo Wook-dong, Executive Director of LS Electric, said, "Starting with this MOU, we will combine the know-how and technological capabilities of both companies to lead the BESS business," adding, "We will first focus on projects within Japan and are also preparing plans to jointly enter overseas markets with Kyudenko in the long term."
